Pierre Haren entered 2nd in Ecole Polytechnique in 1973, joined the Corps des Ponts et Chaussées in 1976 and received a PhD from MIT in 1980 under the direction of Chiang C. Mei.
He was for four years the head of the “Mission de la Recherche” at Ministère de la Mer from 1980 to 1984 where he initiated the creation of IFREMER.
He joined INRIA where he created the SMECI project from 1984 to 1987. This was an expert system shell for Engineering Design with Multiple Worlds in Le-Lisp.
He then created and headed the company ILOG in 1987, introduced it on Nasdaq in 1997, and sold it to IBM in 2008. At the time of the IBM acquisition, ILOG had $200M of yearly revenue, $80M of cash and 9 subsidiaries outside of France. The US contributed to more than 50% of its revenue. ILOG was a world leader in Operations Research tools (CPLEX, OPL Studio), in Business Rules Management Systems (ILOG JRules) and in advanced graphical user interfaces (ILOG JViews and JTGO). Huawei was one of the first customers in China where ILOG had an 80 people profitable subsidiary in 2008.
Pierre stayed at IBM for the ILOG integration (3rd best acquisition of IBM in “time to cash back”), then a confidential research project, and then as head of the Competence Center for Advanced Analytics and Cognitive applications in GBS.
Pierre co-created Causality Link in 2016 with Eric Jensen and now lives in Salt Lake City where he has dual US-French citizenship. Causality Link leverages the knowledge contained in 125 Million documents in 27 languages to build a causal model of the forces acting on the financial world.
Pierre was for 10 years a member of the International Advisors of the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School and a member of the Visiting Committee of the Civil Engineering Department of MIT.
Pierre is also a founding member of the French Academy of Technologies and is Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
