Alice & Bob, a start-up co-founded by Theau Peronnin (X12), has raised 100 million euros
Co-founded by Theau Peronnin (X12) et Raphaël Lescanne in February 2020, the startup Alice & Bob announced on January 28, 2025 the closing of a 100 million euros funding round to develop the first useful quantum computer.
Headquartered in Paris and Boston, the company has already raised 130 million euros in funding, hired over 110 employees, and demonstrated experimental results surpassing those of technology giants such as Google or IBM. Alice & Bob specializes in cat qubits, an innovative technology that reduces the material requirements for building a large-scale quantum computer by up to 200 times compared to competing approaches.
Funding to accelerate quantum innovation
This funding will allow Alice & Bob to accelerate the development of their quantum computer by 2030. Theau Peronnin, co-founder and CEO of Alice & Bob, stated, “After establishing a track record of performance with our cat qubits, we are now entering a new phase focused on building a quantum computer capable of delivering meaningful results. Cat qubits are unique because they make it practical to scale quantum computers: where conventional approaches would require millions of qubits, we would only need thousands.”
The technology of cat qubits
Alice & Bob's cat qubits are at the heart of their innovation. These qubits provide inherent suppression of bit-flip errors, one of the two types of errors affecting quantum computers. This feature is crucial for creating more efficient architectures for fault-tolerant quantum computers (FTQC), capable of resisting errors and functioning in real-world applications. Since its creation in 2020, Alice & Bob is the only company developing quantum computers exclusively with this type of qubit.
Using the funds
The funds raised will be used to improve the performance of the Alice & Bob system, optimize error correction, and develop their first error-corrected logical qubit. Nearly half of the funds will be allocated to building a state-of-the-art laboratory and production facility. The rest will be used to strengthen the team, which has already doubled in size over the past year.
This funding is a crucial step for Alice & Bob in their mission to make quantum computing accessible and practical, paving the way for new technological and industrial advancements.
